About YMCA Tauranga

What we do, who we are, where we are

To us, it’s all about showing your spirit. Ask yourself, when was the last time you showed yours?

Most people hold tightly onto theirs, often too shy to release it. Some people let their spirit run wild, and sometimes have to rein it in- and we meet tonnes of people who have just never been shown how to find theirs. You also get the occasional person who reckons they are just saving their spirit for later.

At the YMCA we work with you to help find your spirit, so you can make the most of your experience and unleash your potential on the world around you.

The YMCA Tauranga provides great opportunities for people of all ages in the Western Bay of Plenty. From our Active Lifestyles for Seniors (ALFS) programmes to sport and recreation to free training courses, the YMCA aims to enable individuals and families to develop physically, mentally and spiritually so that they may enjoy a healthy quality of life.

As the leading provider of after school care (OSCAR) and holiday programmes for school age children in the Western Bay of Plenty, the YMCA Tauranga operates 8 community based OSCAR centres and 4 Holiday Programme centres.

Our vision is to "build strong kids, strong families and strong communities". As a community based not-for-profit organisation the YMCA's purpose is to grow people and strengthen the community.

We strive to be a caring, innovative organisation committed to excellence that acts with integrity. The YMCA Core Values of responsibility, respect, caring and honesty are integral in all that we do.

We are affiliated to:

The National Council of YMCA's of New Zealand, website: www.ymca.org.nz and through them to the World Alliance of YMCAs, web-site: www.ymca.int

We strive to:

Provide accessible community recreational, social, health and educational programmes and services in keeping with our programme culture.

Promote the recognition of the value of each individual and encourage the development of the "whole person" - body (tinana), mind (hinengaro), and spirit (wairua).

To contribute to the development of communities in which people care for and support each other and work together in a spirit of co-operation and goodwill.
