Early Childhood Teaching

It is ideal for those who would love to be an early childhood teacher or work with young child in some way, but who are not quite ready to undertake the level 5 National Certificate.

Those who obtain this certificate can move into the level 5 programme with ease. Class sizes are small and caring relationships are fostered.


Entry Requirements

The course FREE for those aged 18 years and over, who are registered with Work and Income New Zealand as a Job Seeker.

Our programme has three focus areas for participants:

  • To assist learners into employment or further training
  • To increase numeracy & literacy ability
  • To enable learners to gain the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (level 3) or units towards.

This programme also teaches more than just early childhood unit standards.

We encourage  Learners to:

  • develop good work practices.
  • the building of self esteem and confidence.
  • respect for others and themselves.
  • job responsibility and a healthy work ethic.

Topics covered include:

  • Play
  • Communication with young children
  • Nutrition needs for young children
  • Behaviour
  • Safety and hygiene
  • Child development
  • Parenthood and child rearing practices
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Literacy and numeracy assistance
  • CV writing
  • Work experience

Class times:

Mon to Thurs 8.00am to 4.00pm (for 26 weeks)
(includes at least 1 day work experience/week)

Learner’s can start on the course at any time when vacancies exist.
