It is a holistic approach to improving the health and well-being of the older population.
There are four components to ALFS: physical activity, education, social well-being and individual monitoring. Twelve classes a week are offered in the following communities:
|
Smooth Movers is an exercise class set to music that works on fitness, balance, coordination and fun.
Smooth Movers consists of gentle group exercise to music. The music is carefully chosen and consists of sing-a-long type songs from an era which the participants can relate to. YMCA Tauranga has been running Smooth Movers for over 15 years and at present runs 12 classes per week.
Sit and Be Fit provides group exercises whilst in a sitting position. This class was developed by the YMCA Tauranga in May of 2006 to address the need of ALFS participants that had experienced falls, trauma, illness or hospitalization and lost the confidence and, in some cases, their ability to participate in Smooth Movers.
Both classes includes relaxation techniques, confidence building circuits and strengthening exercises using basic, commonplace equipment. Participants are encouraged to assist one another thereby creating a collegiate feeling within the group with positive effects on the group dynamics.
